What research says about headphones and crossings

A pedestrian has two tasks at the same time: moving and making decisions. You need to judge car speed, driver intent, the traffic light, the curb, and other people. Audio adds a third task. Sometimes it is light, like quiet familiar music. Sometimes it is heavy, like a tense work call or a gripping podcast.

  • Music can mask outside signals: a siren, horn, approaching traffic, or bicycle bell.
  • A phone conversation loads working memory: you are mentally answering a person, not just watching the road.
