Short answer if you're in a hurry
Taldykorgan is a compact fruit-orchard town in the Karatal valley, capital of Zhetysu — the Seven Rivers region — historically the homeland of Kazakh clans. The walking logic here is simpler than in Almaty: no mountains in the city itself, but the river, parks and mature trees are everywhere. The air is cleaner than in Almaty overall — there's no temperature inversion, and winter smog rarely settles for long
Basic rule: plan city walks along the Karatal or through the big parks; for a real hike, head into the Dzhungar Alatau. Tekeli, 40 km away, is a great one-day trip; Kapal-Arasan with its mineral springs is a weekend. Inside town everything is in walking distance — 25 minutes on foot from the train station to Zhastar Park

Check the weather and the season first
Taldykorgan has a continental climate with mild winters and hot summers. The main weather variables are summer heat and spring mud, not smog. Before heading out, glance at:
- kazhydromet.kz — official Kazhydromet, temperature and precipitation. Reliable for general planning
- Windy.com — especially useful before a trip into the Dzhungar Alatau. Foothill winds tend to pick up in the evening
- 2GIS — distances around town and bus routes. Solid in the city, partial in the region
Simple temperature rule: summer days hit +35–38°C, and serious effort is risky. The best windows are morning (before 10 a.m.) and evening (after 6 p.m.). Winter usually sits at −5 to −15°C, with occasional thaws — those days the sidewalks turn icy. Air quality in Taldykorgan is noticeably better than in Almaty thanks to the lack of inversion and the distance from major industry
City routes — the river, parks and avenues
1. Square by the akimat
Length: ~1 km loop · Steps: ~2,500 · Profile: flat
The most central square in the city, by the Zhetysu regional akimat. Fountain, benches, light shade from young plane and elm trees. Nearby — government buildings and the starting points for routes into Zhastar Park and the embankment. A perfect short walk between meetings
How to get there: any central route; on foot from anywhere downtown
2. Central Park of Culture
Length: ~2 km big loop · Steps: ~3,500 · Profile: flat
The oldest park in Taldykorgan, dating back to the Soviet era. Rides, alleys, the only place in the city with century-old poplars and elms. Pensioners with outdoor gym in the morning, mothers with strollers in the daytime, schoolkids in the evening. A solid choice on a hot day — real shade from grown-up trees
How to get there: bus #1 or #2 to the Central Park stop
3. Zhastar Park
Length: ~2.5 km big loop · Steps: ~4,500
The youth park in the akimat district — Taldykorgan's flagship of new development. Sculptures, fountains, alleys, yoga and workout areas. People come here for dates, wedding photos and walks with kids. The catch: the trees are still young, midday shade is patchy. The plus: clean, well-maintained and regularly watered
How to get there: 15 minutes on foot from downtown, or any central route
4. Birch grove
Length: ~3 km loop · Steps: ~5,500
A quiet wooded park on the western side of town with mature birches — a rare local treasure. Minimal infrastructure, minimal crowds, clean air. Perfect for a solo walk and meditation. Stunning in winter — white trunks against the snow. Beaten paths, no asphalt
How to get there: bus #7 or any route to the western districts
5. Dostyk Park
Length: ~3.5 km big loop · Steps: ~6,000
A modern park with themed zones for the different peoples of Kazakhstan, sports grounds, cycling paths and gazebos. It hosts cultural events regularly. The trees are young, but the area is generous, so the route ends up long and comfortable
How to get there: bus #7 or taxi, ~10 minutes from downtown
6. Karatal embankment
Length: ~3 km one way · Steps: ~8,500 round-trip
The main embankment along the Karatal river. Developed stretch: asphalt, benches every 150 m, lamps, willow shade. Runners in the morning, families and couples in the evening. The cool air off the river drops the felt temperature 3–4°C — a lifesaver in summer. The best urban route in Taldykorgan
How to get there: bus #3 or #4 to the stops near the Karatal bridge
7. Tole Bi Avenue — train station to Almaty St.
Length: ~4.5 km one way · Steps: ~9,500 round-trip with detours
The main city axis, named after the famous 17th-century Kazakh judge Tole Bi. Wide sidewalks, alleys, cafés and shops — a real pedestrian environment. Along the way — monuments, squares, public buildings. Walk it without rushing, with a few stops, and 8,000–10,000 steps come easily
How to get there: any route along the central axis
8. Zhastar → embankment → Central Park combo
Length: ~8 km loop · Steps: ~11,000
The best long urban route in a single loop. Start at the akimat in Zhastar Park, drop down to the Karatal embankment, follow the river to the bridge, climb up to Central Park and back to downtown. Along the way: river, willows, bridges, mature trees, fountains. 10,000 steps go by unnoticed because the views keep changing
How to get there: start at the akimat, any central route
Out of town — the Dzhungar Alatau and Zhetysu
9. Tekeli — gorge and waterfalls
Length: 5–8 km depending on the trail · Steps: up to 16,000 · Elevation: 300–500 m
The town of Tekeli, 40 km from Taldykorgan, is an old mining capital in the Dzhungar Alatau foothills. Trails start here through gorges with forested streams, waterfalls and stony slopes. One of the most popular one-day trips out of Taldykorgan. Plan 5–6 hours on the trail, plus the round-trip drive
How to get there: regular buses and minibuses to Tekeli; from the bus station, walk or taxi to the trailheads
10. Kapal-Arasan — mineral springs and the mountains
Length: 6–10 km in the gorge · Steps: up to 18,000 · Elevation: 200–400 m
A famous resort area 120 km from Taldykorgan. Hot sulphur springs, lodges and trails through the Dzhungar Alatau foothills. Perfect for a weekend: healing baths plus walks through scenic gorges. The air is genuinely clean — these are real mountains. The drive is ~1.5 hours through the Karatal valley
How to get there: car or organised tour only; no public transport
11. Dzhungar Gates — steppe, mountains and wind
Length: 8–14 km on the plateau · Steps: up to 22,000 · Elevation: 100–300 m
The famous mountain pass on the Chinese border — a historic stretch of the Silk Road. Strong winds, open steppe, red cliffs and isolated boulders. A sense of emptiness and scale you rarely meet in everyday city life. A day trip is brutal: 5–6 hours on the road for 4–5 hours on site. Better with a tent and a sleepover
How to get there: 4×4 or guided tour. If you go alone, bring navigation and extra fuel
Seasons — what works when
Winter (December — February)
Milder than Almaty thanks to the lack of inversion. Average daytime temperature −5 to −10°C, occasional thaws. What to do: walk all day. The Birch grove and the Karatal embankment are especially beautiful under snow. For the Dzhungar Alatau — guide and winter gear required
Spring (March — May)
The best season in Taldykorgan. Apple, apricot and cherry trees bloom — the city is famous for its orchards. Temperature +10–22°C, clean air. What to do: catch April–May for every route and trip into the mountains. Tekeli and Kapal turn especially green
Summer (June — August)
Hot: +30–38°C in the daytime. The river and mature parks are the rescue. What to do: walks before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. The Karatal embankment is always 3–4°C cooler than downtown. Central Park and the Birch grove offer real shade. Kapal-Arasan — combine the walk with a swim
Autumn (September — November)
The second peak after spring. Heat fades from mid-September; October sits at +12–20°C. Orchards in full harvest, the air smells of apples. What to do: get everything in before late October. November brings the heating season, but smog never reaches Almaty levels
What to bring — a short checklist
- Water. 1.5 L for a mountain route, at least a bottle for any urban one
- A cap or hat. Summer sun in the Karatal valley is harsh
- A warm layer. Even in summer, the Dzhungar Alatau cools fast after sunset
- Trainers with grip. Trails around Tekeli and Kapal turn rocky and muddy after rain
- Sunscreen. SPF 30+ in spring and summer
- A charged phone. Coverage is patchy in the mountains; an offline map is a big plus
Bottom line
- Taldykorgan has an honest comfort hierarchy: embankment and parks > downtown > outskirts. The river and mature trees do the work
- The city's main advantage is clean air year-round: no temperature inversion like in Almaty
- The most comfortable route is the Karatal embankment, 8,500 steps round-trip
- The longest urban one is the Zhastar → embankment → Central Park combo, 11,000 steps in a single loop
- The quietest is the Birch grove: forest, silence, almost no people
- The most epic is Tekeli and Kapal-Arasan: gorges and mineral springs of the Dzhungar Alatau
- Seasons matter: best — April-May and September-October; in summer, only morning and evening
The simple rule: Taldykorgan isn't as epic as Almaty, nor as compact as Aktau — but it has its own honest strength. A calm pace, a river through the centre, mature parks and the Dzhungar Alatau an hour away. With five or six trusted spots, walking 10,000 clean-air steps year-round is no problem.
